Get ready for an amazing experience in Iceland, you are in for a treat. With a tummy filled with excitement you can pick up your rental car to get between the adventures that await you during the next three days (choose between car pickup in Reykjavik or KEF airport). Today’s itinerary is packed with amazing stops and a lot of history and natural beauty. The first stop on the road trip is at Thingvellir National park a world renowned geological wonderland where the continental plates meet and drift apart in a beautiful lava fields visible to anyone who visits. The National park is also where one of the world's first parliaments was founded and to walk around it is stunning, as numerous lakes, river and waterfalls reside in the area. We really encourage you to read all the signs you find in the park as the history is extremely rich!
Back on the road you will drive past the beautiful Laugarvatn lake where you will find the Laugarvatn Fontana spa, a spot where many like to stop for a dip and we definitely encourage you to do so.
After passing Laugarvatn you will soon reach the Geysir Hot Springs, a must-visit destination and one of the three main locations that mark the Golden Circle. Here you will need to stop to experience the true power of Icelandic nature as Strokkur, Geysir’s baby brother will spout up into the air creating an awe-inspiring show for anyone who is present. The geyser goes off every 4-10 minutes, so you will not have to wait long until the waterworks take place.
Next up on the Iceland Menu is Gullfoss waterfall or the Golden Falls, a two story drop in a naturally carved canyon with water that originates in a nearby glacier. The vista is astounding as you look over the rapids, a view you will never forget!
You hotel for the night is within the Golden Circle route or the surroundin areas, including the towns of Hella or Hvolsvollur, which will really bring you into the country life! Enjoy the fresh clean air and beautiful surroundings.
Day 2 - The South Coast
Day two kicks off with a bang after you have finished your delicious hotel breakfast, as we have booked for you a glacier hiking tour on Sólheimajökull glacier an outlet ice cap from the mighty Mýrdalsjökull.
The glacier hike will be led by an expert guide and you will join a small group to really get to know and experience the true magic of Icelandic nature.
After the glacier hike it's onwards to see more pearls of nature that reside on the south coast. You'll get a great view over the acclaimed Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano whose glistening ice cap melted heavily when the volcano underneath is erupted ever so famously in 2010, stopping all air traffic.
Right under Eyjafjallajokull, runs the beautiful waterfall Seljalandsfoss. The water there actually comes from Eyjafjallajökull. It is famous for being the waterfall you can walk behind and can easily be described as magical and the magic continues as you step into the gorge of Gljúfrabúi where a hidden waterfall sits quietly in a fairytale-like setting. No words can really do this place justice, you simply must visit!
About 30 minutes away you will find the the powerful and gorgeous waterfall Skógafoss, located at the historical Skógar. This waterfall is like Seljalandsfoss very picturesque and is known for a hidden figure’s face that stares at it. The troll probably lost track of time admiring the waterfall’s beauty and turned into stone.
Next up there is a stop at the incredible Reynisfjara Black Sand beach, a mystical and staggering locations where basalt columns stand tall against the oceans strong waves and caves have been carved into tuff mountains. Prepare to be amazed!
Dyrhólaey cape is the next stop on the train of wonderment where puffins and arctic terns nest in the spring and summer time, it is a place of extravagant views and the long black beach surrounding it is known to capture people’s hearts.
You spend your night in the capital region after driving back from an adventurous day this time seeing the south coast from a whole different angle!
Day 3 - Blue lagoon and Departure
Today is up to you at most and is quite dependant on your flight’s departure time. We suggest exploring the lava covered Reykjanes peninsula and hopefully you will have time to add to the day a visit to the distinguished Blue Lagoon. There you can relax and enjoy your last Iceland moment all whilst soaking in the silica filled baths.
Remember tickets need to be booked in advance to make sure you get a spot as it is very popular.
Other great spots to see on the Reykjanes peninsula are:
