The Leidarendi Cave Tour
We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they open out to reveal an extraordinary scenery of lava formations and unexpected colours. You will see natural stalactites and different rock formations making this an experience of majestic and almost indescribable beauty.
We recommend you wear good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for walking on uneven lava surfaces.
We'll be using torches and not headlights. There are a few reasons for that, mainly because headlights are weaker than torches and it is difficult to point them in the correct direction.
The cave's name translates to "End of the Journey". It was so named because the carcass of a dead sheep which reached its "End of Journey" and is found at the far end of the cave. It is likely that the sheep fell into the cave through a shakehole and was not able to climb out of it.
Cave Leidarendi is about 900 metres long and it is situated near a volcanic crater south-east of the town of Hafnarfjordur. It was first mapped in 1992.
On All Fours
The cave's ceiling and walls are broken or collapsed in very few places and it is therefore easy to navigate. Sometimes the cave’s ceiling gets a bit low so you might have to crawl for a short distance.
Leidarendi lava tube is considered to be a subterranean wonder world. The entrance is a small pit that leads down into the cave; the cave itself runs in both directions and connects in two parts so it runs as a line with a circle in the middle.
We drive you to the Reykjavik marina where you will have about half an hour between tours. You'll be able to buy something to eat in the whale watching boat, if you have forgotten your lunch pack.
The Whale Watching tour departs at 13:00. You'll receive detailed information about it on your voucher.
The Whale Watching
The whales we most commonly spot include minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and even the majestic humpback whales. A wide variety of seabirds can also be observed on this tour. You will need to be ready to train your camera on gannets, guillemots, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns and the thousands of colourful puffins which dot the nearby islands during the puffin season.
The guides use their experience to help you to know where to look to locate the wildlife, describe what is seen and use their scientific knowledge to answer your questions. The crew will make sure that any birders on board will not miss the birds we encounter!
The boats have spacious and finely decorated public areas with huge windows and a café providing refreshments for your convenience. The extra larger viewing deck boasts a fantastic panoramic view and is a great place from which to capture the fantastic scenery around. Experience this photographer's delight for yourself!
Your captain welcomes any curious passenger who wishes to visit the wheelhouse and will explain how all the equipment works.
