Day 1 - The South Coast
We pick you up nice and early to see some of the most amazing natural wonders in Iceland. Along the way there will, in clear visibility, be views of Hekla, in the Middle Ages this particular stratovolcano was known as ‘The Gateway to Hell’. Today, we should also be blessed with views of another legendary volcano, the unforgettable Eyjafjallajökull!
Our first stop is at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, these graceful 60 m high falls are very unusual, we suggest you put on your rainwear before exploring further because there will be some spray! Walking the pathway which goes behind the cascade is something we highly recommend, you will get a unique view and an incredible photo opportunity if you are up for this adventure. If you don´t want to, there is still plenty to see, though! We don´t need to travel many kilometers to get to our next destination, another magnificent 60 m high cascade, Skógafoss Waterfall. On a fine day, at either of these waterfalls, you will often see rainbows around their tumbling torrents, adding another layer of magic to these fairytale vistas. Skógafoss falls from the old sea cliffs, it is easy to see the line of the old coastline here.
A visit to Reynisfjara, a stunning black beach is next on the agenda. The natural wonders to be found at this beach are very famous, including a fabulous cave with very rare basalt columnar formations - people love to be photographed in the cave. Just off the coast you will see astonishing troll-like basalt forms, which lurk above the ocean waves like mysterious giant figurines. Walk along the soft black sand and enjoy exploring but do not stand too close, those awesome waves are powerful, they can, unexpectedly, roar higher up the beach. Standing back you will get a fabulous panoramic view of the silver tipped Atlantic waves washing onto the beach. We stop for lunch at Vík, the southernmost village in Iceland, which is well known for its charming church.
The afternoon part of this tour will take you through the kind of scenery you have, very likely, never seen before - crafted by the powerful volcanoes and floods from the vast icecaps which shroud them. Your accommodation will be in the countryside, ideal in winter to watch the northern lights if the conditions are suitable - perfect, also, to enjoy the bright nights of summer!
Day 2 - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon & Ice Caving
This is glacier day! Your first stop is at the otherworldly Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This lagoon, at the edge of the rapidly retreating Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, has to be seen to be believed. Seeing photographs and film footage is fabulous but it falls far short of actually being there! You have, very likely, seen this place in James Bond movies, documentaries or Games of Thrones scenes, but now you get to experience this place for real! You will see clusters of huge and creatively shaped icebergs floating in the lagoon, many display surprisingly deep shades of blue, ash layers from former volcanic eruptions have also been encapsulated within some of these icy beauties. In summer it is possible to enjoy a boat trip on the lagoon, taking you within touching distance of the ancient ice. The trip sells out quickly, so you are advised arrange the boat trip when you book your tour (extra fee payable). Sooner or later the icebergs will arrive at the nearby ocean, the tidal currents wash a few up onto the Diamond Beach at Jökulsárlón, the sight of these crystalline glistening beauties sitting on rough black volcanic sand is breathtaking. Make sure you have plenty of camera battery!
We head to another of the numerous outlet glaciers which radiate out from Vatnajökull, the largest volume glacier in Europe, perfect for your glacier hike. You will be met by our specialist glacier guide who will issue your glacier equipment and show you how to use it. A few safety points and you are ready for a truly sensational, and for most people, a once-in-a lifetime adventure. Our highly skilled glacier guides are hugely passionate about what they do, making for an exhilarating, fun and informative experience. Learn how the glacier is an ever-changing place which is in perpetual motion and peaceful but not 100% silent. The groans of the ice, and the sound of water ticking through the moulins which can stretch down to the base of the glacier gives a surreal atmosphere, truly a feeling of being part of the world but not of it! You will see all kinds of ice formations, including jagged-edged crevasses and blue ice. Build unique and epic glacier memories to treasure forever!
We will drive you to your accommodation for the night. Your hotel will be in Reykjavík.
Day 3 - The Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon
Today you will see the most popular sights in Iceland, the three magnificent Golden Circle attractions! The scenery along the whole of this great route is beautiful, you will pass through picturesque villages, little towns, attractive countryside and mountain views. Your guide will share some local history and fun stories on your way to the first attraction.
The amazing history and incredible geological features at Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir) were recognized by UNESCO when this stunning place was listed as a World Heritage Site. The geology of Þingvellir is remarkable because the Eurasian and North American continental plates have moved apart here, creating a rift valley, it was this rifting movement which formed the dramatic cliff of the Almannagjá gorge. The tectonic plates continue to separate by around 2 cm (¾ in) per year. You will see the beautiful lake, called Þingvallavatn, and Peningagjá, which means ‘the Money Gorge’. The Icelandic Parliament, the Alþing, was formulated in the year 930 AD at Þingvellir. This national government is, today, the oldest still operating democratic parliament in the world - quite an incredible achievement!
From the power of governance to the power of the glacial Hvítá River and the splendor of Gullfoss Waterfall! This thundering river pours through the dramatic canyon, dropping 32 m in two stages, the torrent pivots a little before disappearing from view as it descends into a massive crevasse. This waterfall brings a powerful reminder of the vastness and the strong forces at work within Icelandic nature. Gullfoss means ‘Golden Falls’, the golden-toned spray which can be seen around the falls, very likely, inspired the name. A journey of a few kilometers will bring us to the Geysir geothermal area, home to the world famous Great Geysir, which is not active now. Luckily, a nearby geyser, Strokkur, erupts very obediently, blasting superheated water and steam up to 40 m high every few minutes. Standing in anticipation is always exciting, most people get a feeling for the moment when Strokkur is primed and ready for action!
Jumping back in the minibus we will take you through gentle rural landscapes to Flúðir, a charming village surrounded by geothermal activities. The Secret Lagoon is located on the edge of the village by a forest, this is one of the most serenely beautiful places in Iceland. The large lagoon, filled with natural geothermal water, is secluded in the midst of nature, bathe in the wonderfully warm water, enjoy a drink at the café, or explore the paths around the pool to see the gurgling hot springs and a small geyser.
We will arrive back in Reykjavík at approximately 18:00.
