Skaftafell is a spectacular nature reserve contained within the Vatnajökull National Park. It is famed for its exquisite natural beauty and the sheer diversity of its landscape, making it an absolute must-see during your time in the land of fire and ice. Skaftafell is renowned for its incredible flora and fauna, which grows between the mighty glaciers and dark volcanic sands, creating a stunning effect. That combined with the powerful cascading waterfalls and a plethora of imposing lava sculptures, ensures that Skaftafell will inspire awe and wonder in equal measure.

The Skaftafell Nature Reserve is renowned for the quality of its hiking and there are a host of short hiking trails that are perfect for a half-day activity. The most popular takes you to the gorgeous Svartifoss Waterfall – where a roaring cascade crashes over majestic basalt rock formations. It is also home to a number of glaciers that can be explored in the company of one of Extreme Iceland’s qualified glacier guides. If you want to explore a beautiful and diverse national park, then Skaftafell may just be the place for you.

The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a breathtakingly beautiful place, which is an absolute must-see for anyone staying in the land of fire and ice. It stands in the shadow of the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, where glimmering icebergs break away from the main body of the glacier and glide across its crystalline surface. This creates a mesmerizing effect and the shimmering hunks of ice look like exquisite natural jewels as they make their way to the nearby Diamond Beach. You can book a boat ride, in the summer, that weaves in and out of the floating wonders allowing you to enjoy them from a totally different angle.

Jökulsárlón is also great for nature lovers, with seals regularly swimming in the lagoon and a host of seabirds nesting nearby. Jökulsárlón will be familiar to movie lovers and it has played a starring role in a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including Die Another Day, Lara Croft Tomb Raider and many, many more. Hofskirkja Church is a turf-roofed church that looks like it is from a fairy-tale. It was originally built in 1884 and is the only remaining turf-roofed church that is still a practicing parish. Turf-roofed buildings used to be incredibly fashionable in Iceland – because the thick layers of dirt and grass would provide better insulation from the bitterly cold winters than concrete. Hofskirkja was built using traditional Icelandic techniques – starting with a timber skeleton, which was surrounded by strong stone walls and topped with heavy concrete slabs and finished with a carpet of green grass. There has been a church at Hof, for more than 700 years, with the first evidence that we have of one coming in 1343. This ensures that the Hofskirkja Church is the perfect way to gain an insight into traditional Icelandic culture and an absolute must for anyone staying at the hotel.
