Description du circuit
We head out of Reykjavik, taking the road east over the pass of Hellisheidi and continuing across the southern lowlands where in good visibility the Westman Islands will be seen out in the ocean; volcano islands which started to form around 20,000 years ago. There are picturesque views to the southern coastline as we pass the town of Selfoss, Eyjafjallajokull Glacier and the Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss Waterfalls, Myrdalsjokull Glacier, the village of Vik, and the nature resort of Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park.
From Skaftafell we continue through the vast desert of Skeidararsandur, an area which can be prone to sand storms. Many of Iceland's biggest glacial rivers run into the Atlantic Ocean off the south shore and each year they carry millions of tons of black volcanic sand with them, constantly altering the shape of the coastline and creating vast black deserts. Just before we arrive at the lagoon, we drive past Oraefajokull glacier, the home of the island's highest peak, at 2119 metres, Hvannadalshnjukur.
Jokulsarlon - is a dreamlike and stunning glacial lagoon - you can take an optional boat tour amongst icebergs of all shapes and sizes and/or go for a walk on the black sand shores. This is a thrilling environment that is constantly changing as the massive glacier tongue retreats. Icebergs of all shapes, sizes and in many hues of blue, turquoise and white, break off from the glacier and float in the lagoon. You will have time to walk the shores of the lagoon and you will probably be very busy with your camera, photographing the amazing shapes and wonderful, mirror-like reflections. To get an even closer view opt for the cruise aboard the amphibious vessel and sail between the oddly-shaped ice formations.
