Description du circuit
The south of Iceland has without a doubt a lot to offer to anyone seeking to experience adventure and being close up and personal with Iceland's stunning nature.
Think about the thrill of a snow-scooter drive on a glacier. You can hike on a glacier if you don't want to drive on it. Horse back riding is also available (not on a glacier, though). ATV driving, ice caving, sailing among icebergs in the lagoon, bird watching on the cliffs of the south shore, seeing the hot springs near Hveragerdi, bathing in a very special geothermal pool huddled against a cliff in the middle of nowhere, and / or visiting the Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre and the Skogar Folk Museum.
Accommodations available go from 4-star hotels to sleeping bag acoommodations. Cozy cottages might be rented as well. Bed & breakfast in gueshouses, farms and country houses has become very popular too. And camping might be a real experience in the beautiful nature.
Jokulsarlon is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier of Vatnajokull between the Skaftafell preservation area in Vatnajokull National Park and Hofn.
Jokulsarlon is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Iceland, and it really is not hard to know the reason why! It first appeared only in 1934-1935, due to the heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers the lake has grown from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today. Approaching a depth of 250m, Jokulsarlon is now the deepest lake in Iceland.
Your tour begins in the morning when we pick you up in or close to Reykjavik. You choose how long you want the tour to last, for example, from 1 up to 3 days – whichever timescale suits you best.
We drive along the South Coast of Iceland, seeing many delightful sights along the route. We will stop at the sights and/or places of interest which you wish to see. For example at: one of South Coast's black sandy beaches; Seljalandsfoss, the waterfall which you can walk behind; the basalt columns at Reynisfjara; the large and symmetrical Skogafoss Waterfall; Skogar Folk Museum, the little town of Vik or the beautiful scenery around Dyrholaey and so on.
Whilst you are driven to the places you have chosen to explore your guide will share their knowledge of the Icelandic Sagas, nature and folktales. We always make sure our passengers enjoy a tour which is informative, entertaining and memorable.
When we reach Jokulsarlon we enjoy the sights by walking on the coast around the lagoon, or simply relaxing in a quiet place to soak up the view. During the summertime it is possible to take a 30 minute boat trip on the lake which you could of course participate in. Another option would be to visit the nearby beach where you would see icebergs floating into the ocean.
This tailor-made tour is designed to be customized to allow you to make the most of your holiday. At Extreme Iceland we want to give you the opportunity to see the glacier lake of Jokulsarlon in a comfortable and fun way which is exactly right for you. We return to Reykjavík by the same route, which means any of the sightseeing stops can be made on the return journey if you prefer.
The tour ends when we drop you off in or close to Reykjavik, wherever you wish.
